RESOURCE RAMBLINGS – AUGUST 2005A warm hello to everyone at this chilly time of year. Hope this newsletter finds you all in good health and fighting fit and if you are unlucky enough to have the flu, hope you’re feeling better soon! AROUND THE HOUSE:Firstly, whilst on the subject of the flu, it’s great to see Bev up and around again after a nasty bout. Lovely to have you back Bev, we missed you! As you’ve all probably noticed by now, at least I hope you have, our Newsletter has a name. Not a very good name mind you but a name nevertheless. I originally started out calling it the ‘Resource Rambler’ but thought that title was more apt for me as I do tend to ramble on don’t I? (no-one has to agree!) Anyway, I hope you like the name however if you have a better suggestion please let me know. It’s been a busy time at the Centre recently with various things happenings including a ‘meet the people’ visit from MP Peter Walsh and a ‘tour’ of our premises by Council members. Conducted by Colleen the visit was to once again highlight just how inadequate this building is for us. The Centre was also delighted to be asked to cater for the Youth Leadership Program that was recently held in Inglewood for the first time. We had to provide lunch and morning & afternoon tea for two days for 16 participants and the facilitators. According to the feedback everyone enjoyed the meals provided and it was suggested they might hold the program in Inglewood again next year, which is great for the town. One thing that I learned was that nothings changed since my days as a teenager, we don’t like/eat fresh fruit! Many thanks to Jean for her pumpkin soup and homemade muffins (they were scrummy) and to Beth for her ‘to die for” beef & vegie soup (she has to be related to Mr Heinz!) In June we invited the Town Hall Committee for morning tea. Unfortunately for reasons best known to themselves they did not come, so the volunteers ended up a having a nice morning tea come lunch that day. It has been decided that due to lack of interest from Community Groups towards our Monthly Morning Tea we will just invite the Community in general. It was also decided that as the Residents from the Hostel really enjoyed themselves when they came we will invite them once a term to join us. It of course goes without saying that all our volunteers are invited as it is one way of saying thank-you for all your hard work. The next morning tea is on the 31st August at 10.30am. Hope everyone can make it. We had our 2nd schnitzel night on the 21st July which was a lot of fun and enjoyed by all who went. Lots of laughs were had, thanks mainly to Heather and her antics! These nights are an opportunity for staff, volunteers and the COM to get together in a social atmosphere away from “the office” but anyone is welcome to come along (we had a hubby, a dad, a neighbour and a mum). Another night is planned for late September. Hope to see you there! This term the Resource Centre has some different and interesting courses on offer, as well as some old favorites. We have a Boat Course (which has been held and proved to be extremely popular), Yoga Workshop, Introduction to Computers and a Basic Internet and Email course. We are also holding an Antique Appraisal Day, which should prove to be very popular with some of the locals. The Walking Group is a happy and friendly group who continue to look forward to their weekly walk and we all enjoy the cuppa and chat afterwards. We welcome our newest walker, Gordon and hope he enjoys himself. Just a warning though Gordon, it’s not only your legs that get some exercise, the jaw gets a good workout too! The Group is planning an Op-Shop Crawl in Bendigo on Wednesday 17th August along with lunch and we’re all madly saving our pennies. It should be a lot of fun and if it’s successful we’ll plan another one for Marybourough later in the year. The Walking Group meets every Monday at 9.00am outside the Recource Centre and everyone is welcome. STAFF SNIPPETS:A very Happy Birthday to Barbara who is celebrating her birthday in September. We hope you have a lovely day Barbara. Beth is, as usual, a very busy lady. She not only co-ordinates the smooth running of the Resource Centre, she has two other job, is President, Secretary & social organiser of the Dunolly fooy club and still finds time to help out in the Community. When do you sleep Beth? Catherine continues to work hard researching and co-ordinating our Course Program. It can’t be an easy task deciding what courses to offer, whether they’re suitable for the Community and if people will be interested in attending, but you do a great job Catherine and we’re lucky to have you. A big congratulation to Jean who firstly has just sold all her Finn wool tops in one order and secondly together with hubby Bruce had a very successful display at the recent Annual Australian Sheep & Wool show in Bendigo. Apparently everyone loved the jackets they wore which had their own special Finn emblem embroidered on them. Also congratulations to Vhonda who now has a full-time job. Vhonda was a volunteer at the Centre as part of the “work for the dole” scheme and although we’re sorry to lose her, it’s great to see one of our younger Community members gain employment. Thanks for all your help Vhonda and best wishes for the future. Gordon has almost finished his TAFE computer course and scored a perfect 100% on his last test. He only has three more steps to complete before sitting the final exam and we all wish him the very best. Go get ’em Gordon! Heather is continuing successfully in her Leadership Program and was recently a guest speaker at the dinner held as part of the Youth Leadership Program. She spoke about what is involved with her program, what role she plays as part of the Group and what motivates her. She also shared some of her experiences while on the program and how it is impacting on her everyday life. Debbie has been working hard getting the books and accounts up to date and she scored a big first when our BAS was submitted one day early! (Could explain why I’m sure I saw her doing cartwheels in the backyard that day). Well-done Debbie and it was nice to finally meet you. SO THEY SAY:§ The most dangerous part of a motor car is often the nut behind the wheel! § How to live to 100 – when you reach 99 be very careful! § Boys will be boys – and so will a lot of middle age men! § The best 10 years of a woman’s life is between 28 and 30! § One way to stop a run away horse is to bet on it! Well that’s about all for this edition. If you would like anything included in the Newsletter or have a story, joke, recipe etc. that you’d like to share, any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Until next time take care and be happy! Most people are as happy as they make up their mind to be. |
