The July meeting was on Saturday July 23rd, at the home of Sandra and Greg Penna. The evening's entertainment (apart from the usual enjoyment of Indonesian food and each other's company) was a silent auction. We've raised funds for BAIK in a number of ways over the years, but this silent auction was a First. Members brought along articles to be auctioned. These were displayed with the name of the donor and a suggested starting price on a sheet beside each. Bidders added their names and bids to the sheet. What a selection we had! Food, both sweet and savoury, jewellery, cards, both hand-made and commercial, candles, plants, the offer of a load of wood, window cleaning services, a barbeque, a dinner set...and more. Throughout the night members browsed and bid. One item of particular interest was an Indonesian-English electronic dictionary. The list of bidders grew longer and longer and the price inched up and up. (David, were you by any chance trying to artificially inflate that price? From $16.00 to $16.10? Indeed!) After our meal Des Lowry, with George Wood ably assisting as money-collector, distributed the items to the successful bidders. The evening's auction raised just over $302. Thank you to all who participated, both donors and buyers. Special thanks go to Des and George for their organisation. This month we again gladly welcomed new members. Our newest members are Samsul and Endah Widodo and their three children Bella, Jova and Vallene, from Jakarta but expecting to be in Bendigo for the next eighteen months. Samsul is doing Masters studies at La Trobe University. Bella and Jova are also studying, but at Flora Hill Primary School. We wish them all well for their stay in Australia and look forward to meeting them again at future BAIK meetings. Thank you Sandra and Greg for your hospitality and thanks to everyone who attended.
