Friends raising funds to complete a classroom at St Rubina Primary School on Bougainville Island in Papua New New Guinea.

HUAPO Community is located on the southern end of the island of Bougainville. The community consists of three villages Humuilo, Akanai and Potulai. HUAPO was formed in 1999 as a community group to restore the essential services for their community, due to the destructions cause by the ten years old political crisis.

The restoration programme has been directed to the three main areas.
1. Rehabilitation – Assisting people to develop as individuals and as community members
2. Reconstruction – Re-establishing the Infrastructures
3. Resettlement – Returning of villagers from bush camps and care centres to their home bases.

Programmes 1 & 3 have been completed.

Programme 2. The community is endeavouring to establish a community school (Prep-year 8) being held in one double classroom, one single classroom.

Ausaid, under the rehabilitation programme, have assisted the community with hardware and building materials (mainly roofing iron and nails, cement, etc). The community working in partnership have contributed land, labour, sawn timber, oil to mill timber; chainsaws; timber mill; spare parts, carpenters, tools and food rations for working bees.

The community is seeking partners to help them complete the classroom to enable them to provide education to the children in the community and surrounding villages. The students that attend the school range from 6 to 24 years. The reason for older students is that they were denied an education during the political conflict.
