Birds of Altona Coastal Park
This sign was designed and erected by the Friends group and identifies some of the birds you might see on you trip to the park. Many of these birds are migratory and depend heavily on this site for feeding. It is therefore important that we conserve and enhance the area to ensure their survival. Disturbance by dogs and dirt bikes could interupt their feeding patterns preventing them from making it to their next stop.

Altona Racecourse Grandstand Remains

The Altona Coastal Park was previously the site of a Racecourse, where Pharlap had run. The remains of the grand stand and one of the palms at the entry to the grandstand still remain. There are remnants of the concrete toilet blocks along the creeks edge, however please be careful when wandering off the beaten track, as there are pits and rubble and lots of snakes.

The Ford Plantings by the Friends of Altona Coastal Park

The entry to the Altona Coastal Park is located near the Ford crossing of Kororoit Creek. This area was planted by the friends group several years ago and has developed into an example of the flora that would have once been extensive through the area. The site features River Red Gums, Chaffy Saw Sedge, Noon Flower, Boobialla, saltbushes and many more. The Kororoit Creek at this point is home to many birds and aquatic invertebrates, including Egrets, Pelicans, Black Swans, Cormorants, ducks and swamp hens.

Who are the Friends of Altona Coastal Park and what do they do and what are thier objectives? This conservation focused group are looking for new members to help them restore the flora of the Altona Coastal Park to its former glory.

The group undertakes working bees and planting days on the 3rd sunday of every month (except December) between 9.30am and noon, meeting at the Ford parking area.
