Muslims in Bendigo


Most Muslims in Bendigo are International Students studying at La Trobe University and so are non-permanent. Some years there is a large intake of Muslim students and other years there are less. Students come from all over the world; the Middle East; the Indian sub-continent, South-East Asia, Africa.

Beside students, muslim community in Bendigo comprises of permanent residents that originate from different ethnic and nationality; such as Indonesian, Malaysian, Somalis, Australian, Indians, Pakistani and Turkish. Some of them have been lived and worked in Bendigo for many years. Therefore, the Bendigo Muslim community is ethnically diverse.

Muslims have been in Bendigo since early times. In the early days of the town Afghan traders lived here. There are some old Muslim graves in local cemeteries.

The nearest centre with a large Muslim population is Shepparton to the north-east of Bendigo. There are large Turkish, Albanian and Iraqi communities and several mosques in Shepparton.
