Global Youth - Act It Out!
About us
Youth action for local and global reconciliation
GY is an association of young people from many different countries working together to give a voice to young people and provide a platform where they can be heard, as well as building connections and relationships with other young people all over the world.
GY was founded in 2002 by Frida and developed further through the experience of the Global Reconciliation Network's conference in London 2003, where representatives from community groups, peace, aid and human rights organisations met to discuss ways of promoting communication between people from different cultures, races, religion and backgrounds. GY is designed for young people to be able to take on these issues and tackle them in their own way.
Our philosophy
Young people possess the power to change and respond to the issues they face. Through their connecting with and learning from each other's life experiences, this potential can be realised. We believe that regardless of race, gender, age or background everyone is able to make a valuable contribution to their communities, families and society.
Aims
To instil a desire in young people to learn about and communicate with others
To develop settings where young people can be comfortable to voice their opinions freely.
To provide ways in which young people can realise the value of their contribution to society and help develop the skills needed to take action.
What we do
Current local projects include the 'World Cafe' : a cafe-style space where young people can come together through music, board games and sport to develop friendships and share lifestyles.
We are involved in planning music workshops, community gardening, cooking and cross-culture participation in games linking with local schools and other regional exchanges.
Overseas we are developing youth exchange projects in Africa, India and Bosnia.
GlobalConnect - An ongoing connection between youth groups around the world. Currently there are three groups involved in Kenya, India and Australia. Activities include regular e-mails and web-cam meetings.
How we work
We work in a friendly, non-judgemental way.
Individual needs are respected and supportively worked around.
We enable each other to work in ways each person is comfortable with.
We build around each other's individual skills, support each other's skill development and seek expert help readily.
We are flexible - you choose how much time you have.
