Australian Gliding Club Class Nationals Competition January 2007 Benalla Victoria
National and international Club class glider pilots will be competing over a ten day period in January 2007 at the Gliding Club of Victoria (GCV) in Benalla. The 2007 Club Class Nationals will take place from the 8th to 19th of January 2007 and entries for competitors are open now.
Lauched every 45 seconds, these sailplane pilots will compete daily for skill and time in a field of 60 including many pilots of top international standing.
Despite using some of the lightest and agile planes that exist, it is the pilot's stamina and skill that determines the true champion. There is no margin for error either; only the best of the best can take part and these guys and gals are at the top of their game.
Tasks set test flying skills under difficult or fine skies as well as knowledge of Australian no fly zones like the Benalla ADF factory. Team flying is permitted.
Glider pilot, John Switala is the president of The Gliding Club of Victoria at Benalla and welcomes queries from competitors, their crew and spectators about the competition or any aspect of sailplane flying.
Volunteers are needed to assist over January so take a holiday to Benalla and be an integral part of Australia's largest national gliding competition!

For those pilots visiting for the first time, Benalla has large areas of flat land to the north, with foothills and Alpine Mountains to the south. This landscape provides variety for competition tasks.
The airfield has a large (long and wide) grass east-west (08-26) strip, as well as a parallel sealed power strip. Two parallel grass runways are also available north-south (17-35).
Two tie-down areas are available. The first is adjacent to the runways and can accommodate approximately 20 aircraft. Further space is available in front of the club hangars. There is a fully equipped workshop which can be booked in advance for motorised aircraft services or for sailplane inspections and maintenance.
The gliding clubhouse has a large room well suited for briefing and the evening meal. The clubhouse is air-conditioned and has a licensed bar.
Evening meals will be available at the clubhouse around $12 a meal, so visitors are welcome to catch up with other pilots and the latest weather gossip . Breakfast and packed lunches are also available for fans and crew.
Alternatively, Benalla has a number of restaurants, clubs and take-away outlets to suit all tastes. The Benalla Art gallery has a great restaurant overlooking the lake and not far from the relaxing plunge into Benalla's Municipal pool for those hot summer rest days.
