Notes on the marriage of Elizabeth Wall.
William Wall was baptised at Iron Acton in 1803 at the age of 3. It has come to light that he was the son of William Dirham of Westerleigh and Elizabeth Wall of Iron Acton, whose marriage was found to be illegal because he had another wife still living. Hence the baptism simply recorded the infant as son of Ellizabeth Wall, with no comment about the infant being a bastard, or anything else throwing any blame on Elizbeth, since it was in no way her fault that the marrige was illegal. The marriage in 1798 was by licence, the application for this was signed by William Ludlow, a prominent farmer of Yate, and he has the bondsman guaranteeing that all the information was correct, and he was bound in the sum of £200 which was unusually high in those days. William Ludlow appeared at the marriage in Iron Acton the next day, which was a Thursday, and signed the register as a witness.

Elizabeth was baptised at Rangeworthy on 15.6.1783. She would only have been about 15 at the time of the bigamous marriage at Iron Acton on 14.6.1798. She would not have appeared at the time of the application for the marriage licence, and the Rector of Iron Acton probably had never seen her before she appeared at the church to be married. Nor would he have seen the bridegroom, William Dirham, who was not one of his parishioners. But she was already pregnant, her first child, called William, was baptised at Iron Acton on 18.11.1798, but was buried on 27.7.1800. By that time, it was known that the marriage was illegal, and there is an entry in the Vestry Minute Book on 19 11.1800 the parish to be at the expence of takeing of William Duram. And the Rector added his own comment in the burial register when the first child was buried W.W. was the son of William Dirham and Elizabeth Wall, who were married June 14 1798 but it appeared that he had a former wife then living.

The spelling of the bridegroom's name was somewhat variable, and suspect that he was living and probably working for the Yate farmer, William Ludlow - under an assumed name. Anyway, once the news was out, the farmer would have wanted to cover up his own connection with the marriage, and would be in a good financial position to see that the culprit made a clean escape. As far as I know he was never found. It would have been a case for transportation if he was discovered, and the farmer could hardly keep out of the picture. But Elizabeth was already pregnant with a second child, who must have had this William Dirham as his father. Doubtless the farmer would have been taking care of Elizabeth, as there is no record of her receiving any Parish Relief. And the fact that the second child was not baptised at Iron Acton until 1803, with the child stated to be 3 years old, indicates that someone else had eventually got round to organising this.
Elizabeth had a proper marriage at Iron Acton on 15.4.1805, to Robert Cam.
