Profile

Graham Porter ngporter23@yahoo.com.au
I was raised in the Barossa Ranges, part of Adelaide Hills. I started school at seven years of age and happily finished before I was thirteen and a half. One could in those days, if one passed the qualifying certificate. Otherwise it was mandatory to attend state school until one reached the mature age of fourteen.

I have always loved reading. I recall once I was stuck on a run with only a bible to read. The fascination of all this begatting in the Old Testamant! It was truly enthralling.

I have tried many and varied jobs, many of which no longer exist:

  • Stripping Wattle Bark

  • Cowboy (Tit Puller)

  • Wood Cutter

  • Rouseabout in a Shearing Shed

  • Army

  • Cane Cutter

  • Dredge Hand

  • Timber Felling

  • Milkman

  • Builder's Labourer - self-promoted to Carpenter (I repped for both unions)

  • Safety Officer

  • Apprentice Master

I served nine years as Fitzroy councillor, one as Mayor. The first half of my mayoral allowance was in pounds, the second half in dollars.

Married Merle in 1952 in Maryborough, Victoria. Only child, Michelle, born in 1962 and have two grandsons, Matthew and Joel.

Hobbies include paying bills, playing golf poorly and trying to write, being encouraged by some very, very clever ladies and Bill.
