Schools

Government Schools

In Victoria, government schools are in integral part of their local community. They promote cultural diversity and offer supportive study environments for all students, including international student and students from language backgrounds other than English. Victoria government schools provide a free education; most schools ask for a voluntary contribution to enhance the school’s educational and sporting programs. Parents can decide whether to make these voluntary contributions.

Non-government schools

Non-government schools may have a religious affiliation or a particular educational philosophy. These schools charge fee, and the fees vary between schools. Parents who want to find out about non-government schools education should make an appointment with the relevant non-government educational authority or contact the selected school directly.

Enrolment

For enrolment, schools can be contacted by telephone or in person. Overseas born student enrolling for the first time need additional documents. Parents should take a visa or entry to Australian documents, proof of their children date of birth, and any papers (including school report) relating to their children’s education. Parents are also required to present a consolidated immunisation Certificate. This can be obtained from the local Council. Interpreters can be provided at the time of enrolment.

Interpreters.

DE&T has a contact with a service provider to provide interpreting and translating services free to schools within guidelines provided. Non- English speaking parents and carers can ask the school for an interpreter to be present when discussing matters involving their children.

Non-Speaking children.
Newly arrived children who don’t speak English can enrol in English Language Schools (ELS) and Centres (ELC) which provide intensive English language programs designed for children. For more information on English language programs for school children, visit the website or ask a local school.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

The VCE is an internationally recognized qualification that is awarded for work done in Years 11 and 12. When a student receives their VCE in shows they have satisfactorily completed their final years of secondary schooling.
English is compulsory at VCE and teachers help students choose English unit that suit their particular needs. Study for the VCE is usually completed over two years but some students-find it easier to spread their VCE over three years. This allows more time for these students to develop theirs English skills. Schools can advice when this is appropriate.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The VCAL is a fully accredited structured senior secondary qualification. It gives Year 11 and Year 12 students an additional pathway into further education, training and employment.
These are:
ü Accredited studies in mathematics and English
ü Work related skills including the option to complete TAFE certificate or units from a range of vocational certificate; and
ü Subjects that develop students personal skills, including self esteem, community awareness, communication skills and the ability to work as a part of a team.

Students who complete the VCAL, like students who complete VCE, receive a recognised formal qualification and a Certificate and a Statement of Result. In addition, students who choose to do the VCAL will gain a set of qualifications that include work related skills and industry specific skills.

Post-secondary Education.

Adult and Community Education (ACE)

ACE courses are offered by a number of services in local communities including Neighbourhood Houses, Community Centres and Learning Centres. These Centres offer a broad range of programs and activates which may include courses such as adult literacy, general education, for adults, English as Language (ESL), information technology and business subjects, art and creative writing, budgeting and cooking. Many courses are accredited, so that learner receives a certificate or qualification recognized by governments and industries right across Australia.

TAFE (Technical and Further Education)

TAFE is available as a study option for school-leavers and adults. TAFE courses are designed for people who want vocational, technical, or trade skills. There are broad study areas including: information technology, business service, arts and media, tourism and hospitality, construction and transport, rural and mining, manufacturing and engineering. TAFE collages charge fees and students usually need to buy their own books.

Monash University
The minimum requirements for entry to Monash will be met by satisfactory completion of the VCE, including satisfactory completion of Units 3 and 4 English (any).
Interstate and overseas applicants may also satisfy entry requirements on the basis of comparable Year 12 qualifications completed in other states of Australia or overseas.
