Disability Action Southeast (DAS)
In late 2006, the DRC established an action group to inform the work of the DRC and to highlight local issues which are important to people with disabilities in the region & to campaign for change.
Disability Action Southeast (DAS) has a membership which comprises of up to 12 people with disabilities living in the outer southeast growth corridor. Individual members of the group currently travel from the Mornington Peninsula, Pakenham, Koo Wee Rup, Casey and Dandenong to meet at least once every two months, sometimes more often.
A founding member of Disability Action Southeast Shaunagh Stevens states “As a person with a disability I have become accustomed to advocating for myself and have spent a lot of time frustrated. A single voice is rarely taken seriously and often dismissed. Therefore, I joined DAS so my voice would be heard and acknowledged. It is very important to me that I continue taking an active role in improving access into our communities; anything less would mean I accept the inequalities that presently exist.”
In its first meeting for 2008, Disability Action Southeast developed a plan of action for the next twelve months. The plan involves working on developing closer links with local government; improving access to and increasing disabled parking; and preparing for a forum focusing on Accessibility in a landscape of rapid growth, with a particular emphasis on issues of isolation and accessible housing.
DAS currently meets in Dandenong. People with disabilities living in the regions of Casey, Cardinia, Frankston, Kingston and the Mornington Peninsula are encouraged to participate. To assist during the meeting the DRC will provide attendant care and on request reasonable costs of transport will be reimbursed.
