Australian Apocalypse: the story of Australia’s greatest cultural monument describes the background of the indigenous history of Australia, the events that led to the annihilation of the makers of the Dampier rock art, the history of its re-discovery, the growing threat to the world’s largest art gallery as it became the site of Australia’s largest industrial concentration, and the neglect and systematic destruction it has suffered since the 1960s. This book recounts how its author, having re-discovered the Dampier rock art in the 1960s, sought to secure its protection for several decades until at last, in desperation, he challenged the might of industrial empires and a state government. It also presents an apocalyptic prediction, made by one of the very last of the old order of Australia - a prophetic disclosure that is already beginning to come true. The volume chronicles what happened when one state of Australia was run by men without vision, without a clue and without integrity. It is essential for all Australians who care for their country, it is essential for all people who care about the cultural heritage of indigenes around the world, and it is addressed to all people who consider themselves civilised. Australian Apocalypse: the story of Australia’s greatest cultural monument by Robert G. Bednarik contains 32 pages of colour plates, in A4 format, of the glorious rock art of the Dampier Archipelago. It has been produced with the collaboration of the relevant traditional custodians who have reviewed and approved its rock art images for general viewing (up to one half of the Dampier rock art is sacred and may not be viewed by people of one gender, or by any uninitiated person in certain cases). If the sale of this book, which is intended also as a catalogue for the free travelling exhibition Visions of the past: the world’s most endangered rock art, should yield any surplus after printing and distribution costs are met, any such moneys will automatically be directed into the Rock Art Protection Fund (RAPF). It is the declared goal of RAPF to secure the permanent protection of the Dampier rock art and other threatened sites around the world. The author and the publisher derive no financial benefit whatsoever from this book.
