COYWORKERS ONLINE
This is a support group for union members working at the City of Yarra. Its purpose is to 'inform and empower' members.
The coyworkers group aims to provide an environment where members can discuss problems, issues, ideas, etc., relating to their work experience. They can post messages to the notice board, discuss matters in the forum, upload links to share with others, participate in online chats, post photographs, initiate or participate in 'mini' polls to see how others feel about an issue. In other words, be an active part of the COY union community.
It also provides access to information about union actions and campaigns at Yarra, being undertaken by your elected Shop Stewards, your Shop Committee and your ASU Organiser. In addition, there are links to interesting and important information, including research, affecting workers here and abroad.
The group is only open to union members below management level and we reserve the right to decline membership to an applicant who may compromise members' confidentiality. Therefore, all applicants must disclose their real name to the owner before being approved. However, you may sign on to the group with a pseudonym (e.g., yahoo nickname & address). For your information, mc2 also supplies netmail for members and you may prefer to get an mc2 email account to keep your membership mail separate from your 'general' mail.
HOW TO USE THE GROUP
Forum: This is for posting questions, ideas, thoughts, etc., to the group to start a conversation on a topic. Be sure to give a distinctive name to the topic so that conversations don't get confused and posted to a different one by mistake. For example "OHS issue" could cover anything because it's so broad but "OHS Designated Work Groups" defines what the thread relates to.
Mailing List: Is best used for asking specific questions (e.g., about - but not confined to - your own situation). Everyone who has elected to receive the mailing list has the opportunity to respond with their own views, experiences, etc., of the situation being discussed. Everything sent via the mailing list email is accessible to the group. To ask a private question - not shared with the group - send an email to the individual by clicking on their name on the members list.
Notice Board: Is used for posting announcements of interest or importance, for example, if there's a survey being run in which members might participate, resources available, research published, or anything of immediate interest. If the issue has some 'longevity' (i.e., is of ongoing interest/concern) consider posting it to the 'links' as well.
Chat: to have a 'real time' text conversation to another group member.
Shared Files: files of interest to other group members. For example, you will find pamphlets, forms, info sheets, self-help templates, etc., to download/print here.
Group Files: This is a 'read only' section. At this point there are no files here.
Photos: Feel free to post photos that you want to share here. It's a good idea to create an album and 'name' photos. There's an approval process for posting these but no problems anticipated because I'm sure none of OUR members would be inappropriate.
Events: This is open to all members to advertise their own or others events that might be of interest - or just to promote - to the group.
Polls: We will be running 'little' polls to gather members' views on issues of interest/concern from time to time. This is just one way we can stay in touch with what matters to you, to inform our negotiations and campaigns with management.
Links: Lots of useful links to pages where you can keep yourself informed, participate in other activities and campaigns, educate yourself on your rights, etc. You can post links yourself; try to keep to the most relevant category (or invent your own if none seems right for an item) to make the link accessible to others.
Webpages: This is really basic at the moment, mostly due to time constraints. Anyone who wants to contribute to building a better one should let the owner know :).
Invite a friend: You can invite others to join (click on 'invite a friend' on the 'features' panel). When inviting someone, remember the criteria for membership, i.e., union member below management level, so they will qualify.
Members: A list of the members.
FEEDBACK/QUESTIONS: If you find an error, have a problem/complaint or there's something you don't understand, please notify the group owner or moderator/s.
