Mildred Clara (known as Clara or Clare) Worthington was born at Camp Hill, Forbes, NSW on 2 January 1884. She was the third child of John Joseph WORTHINGTON & Mary Ann DONOHOE. Clara's story is a little complicated. My grandfather and her son, Eugene 'Roy' Worthington stated on his marriage certificate that his parents were Harry Worthington (cabinet maker) and Clare Budd, yet his birth certificate listed Mildred Clara Worthington and no father. We thought until recently that Roy had simply plucked two names out of the air on the day of his marriage to hide the fact that he had not known his father. The Children
Clara's Death Certificate
Clara died at the age of 66 (certificate states age 62) on 16 Jan 1950 at Coogee, Randwick, NSW. The informant was her son, John Arthur Goodwin. The certificate states that Clara married twice: 1) Thomas Arthur GOODWIN in Sydney, NSW when Clara was 23 (1907 or 1911) and there were two children from this marriage - John Arthur GOODWIN aged 36 (b. 1914) and Katheen L. GOODWIN aged 33 (b. 1917) 2) Robert Hamilton McBLANE in Sydney, NSW when Clara was about 32 (they married 1920) and there were no children from this marriage. Robert Hamilton McBLANE b. 1883 Ilfacombe, Qld.; parents Robert Hamilton McBLANE & Margaret BURKE; occupation - schoolteacher; d. 1937 St Peters, NSW; buried Rookwood Cemetery, NSW with Clara. Thomas Ernest Goodwin
Who was Roy's Father?
The Other Children It is certain that John Arthur GOODWIN and Jack WORTHINGTON were the same person. John Arthur Goodwin enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Paddington during WWII, he listed Clara McBlane as has next of kin, and his record shows he had the same birthdate as Jack Worthington. He was a member of the 2/30 Infantry Battalion. He married Dorothy Mary BYRNE in 1941 at Burwood, NSW and died on 25 Feb 1978 at the Western Suburbs Hospital, Sydney, NSW at the age of 65. Kathleen Leah GOODWIN died at the Rachel Forster Hospital, Redfern NSW on 30 Oct 1989 aged 74 years. This is consistent with the 1915 birth date of Leah WORTHINGTON. She was cremated at Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Matraville, NSW on 8 November 1989. The death certificate shows that Kathleen never married and had no next of kin, and the informant appears to have been a hospital worker. The other child, Reginald, was possibly adopted by a family named Lawson. On his marriage certificate he called himself 'Reginald Worthington, known as Lawson'. On 26 Sep 1932 at Kogarah, NSW he married Mary Grace Giltrow. He was a 20 year old pastrycook at Kogarah. On his marriage certificate he stated that he was born at Paddington, that his mother was Clara Worthington, and he listed no father. |
