Frederick Kyling arrived in Moreton Bay, Australia from Hamburg, Germany at the age of 24 aboard the Johann Caesar. His emigration record shows his occupation as a silk knitter and his immigration record shows his occupation as a shepherd. He spent some time in the Darling Downs area (presumably working as a shepherd for the freeholders) before marrying and settling in Warwick. His 1862 marriage certificate states that he was a jeweller, but birth certificates of his children in 1864 and 1874 give his occupation as "bushman". He went on to work as a carpenter and hotel keeper in Warwick.
