When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens . . .

The ending of the poem pleases its readers when the woman says . . .

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

The Red Hat Society began in California as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and élan. They were inspired by a poem called, “Warning,” by Jenny Joseph, who depicted an old woman who declares revolution against her encroaching age by planning to wear red hats and purple outfits.

Thus was born a very loose and casual international organization of women who just want to have fun. Red Hat Societies exist in more than 33 countries from Algeria to Wales, Australia to Venezuela. There are chapters in every state in the U.S. and across Canada.

How Bendigo group started;
In May 2004 when I was in Canada I came across a group of ladies dressed in smart purple pants suit with red cowboy hats with a purple plume. Being curious I approached them and was told the “Red Hat Society” story.
A week or so after returning home there was an article in a magazine about Red Hats and growing old disgracefully.
Wow! “What a great idea” I thought and so seconded a couple of friends to form a group. We now have more than thirty members and growing, we meet once a month for morning tea or lunch. The date and venue for the next meeting is decided on that day.
That is the brief history of the Red Hat Society, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.
Esther.

Red Hat Society HQ

Our main responsibility is to have fun! We see this group as an opportunity for those who have shouldered various responsibilities at home and in the community their whole lives, to say goodbye to burdensome responsibilities and obligations for a little while. This is the place to have fun and enjoy yourself. The refrain of the popular Red Hat Society theme song by Mike Harline puts it rather bluntly:

Red Hat Rockettes

We are an official chapter of the Red Hat Society, located in Rockingham, Western Australia. Our first meeting was on the 14th September, 2005. If you would like to know more about this world-wide phenomenon of crazy ladies, then please contact us for more info! We'd LOVE for you to come and join us!

Aussie Red Hatters

Calling all AUSTRALIAN Red Hat Society ladies!!! This group is for Aussie Red Hat ladies to get together and swap ideas and info about Red Hatting... Or to just have a natter... To get to know each other a little... And to find out what is happening with other Red Hat Society Chapters throughout Australia. C'mon girls... come and join in the Red (and Pink) Hatted FUN!

Sydney (RHS) Sassy Sisters

Sydney (RHS) Sassy Sisters, an official chapter of the Red Hat Society, was established in December 2003 by Queen Mum Karen after a visit to the states where she 'discovered' the wonderful world of Redhatting! Our chapter began with a core group of crafters but quickly became cosmopolitan after women across Sydney saw our beautiful photograph on page 3 of the Daily Telegraph on July 31, 2004.

Matilda Rose RHS

Welcome to Matilda's Australian Chapter of an Official Chapter of the Red Hat Society, where you can view the Hat'penings from around the states.

Bendigo News We are having a tough time at the moment, former President Joy has moved to Melbourne to further her studies, and is now our State delegate on AVADSC and VERTAC. Joy is still a very active member of P.V.A. (as well as furiously studying for her Masters) Brenda took over as interim President, but had to relinquish the position due to health problems, I have added to my tasks by taking on the job. I am a World War 2 widow, my late husband served in the Navy. My experiences are similar to widows from other conflicts. I also represent Bendigo at State level, if you have any issues that need to be dealt with please let me know. It is certainly a busy life, but that’s what it is all about, helping each other! Laughter is the best medicine! Talking of laughter many of our branch are members of the Red Hat Society and it is a hoot. Keep smiling, Esther Patterson
