Playing the game
Both Victorian Ladies Bowling Association and Royal Victorian Bowling Association are bound by a constitution, and play is conducted according to the Laws of the Game of Bowls in Australia, with specific rules for competition.
There is a variety of different games that can be played: Singles, Pairs, Triples, or Fours for both men, ladies or mixed gender competitions. There is also a number of different handicap events designed to give all players a chance of winning.
In Singles players use 4 bowls, Triples 2 or 3 depending on the specific format, and Fours use 2 bowls. Bowls now come in all different types, sizes, colours, and weights. Different bvowls may require the player to take a wider or narrower aiming line. Sizes vary to allow the bowl to sit comfortably in your hand. Colours are only for show, but weights vary, with standard, heavyweight, and extra heavy weighted bowls.
Beyond club events, and club championships, and the respective pennant competitions, there are also group or district championships, Victorian (metropolitan and country) championships, State and International events.
Age is no barrier either as there are Under 18, Under 25 and Under 35, Open age, and Over 50 and Over 60 competitions.
Pennant
Members elect selectors each year, and players are selected according to their ability, potential, form, balance and compatability. Pennant consists of 4 teams of 4 players to make a side of sixteen. Bundoora has 7 sides in the RVBA competition, and 5 sides in the VLBA competition played in many different divisions. Last season the Men's top side were premiers in Divison 1 and earned promotion to the Premier League. They're now with the big boys, as one of only 10 sides in the metropolitan area in this league. While the Ladies' top side also won their section in A1 division.
Club clothing
The Ladies uniform has also changed over the years, although colours are predominatly white or navy blue. Frocks, skirts, culottes, slacks and shorts provoide some variety in style. Of course there are some rules contained in the VLBA's guidelines.
The Men's uniform is white or cream, but the clubs have adopted coloured shirts, jackets and caps. Rules contained in RVBA guidelines. Bundoora has a white shirt (long or short sleeves) with green and gold lightning bolts on the fron and back. The club has a green jacket with gold edging, and green cap.
