TOM'S MISTAKE
Brett Reynolds b19reynolds@bigpond.com| One summer night Tom went to bed but he couldn't get to sleep because he was hot. So he decided to see what was on the T.V. and there was a Doctor talking about people who mix up some things to make them turn up side down. On the bottom of the screen it said DON'T DO IT. But Tom couldn't read. So he decided to try it tomorrow. While he was in bed, he was thinking about what it would be like to be up side down for a day. After a while he said to himself that he wouldn't tell anyone about what he was going to do then he fell asleep.
Next morning his Mum knocked on his door and said that his breakfast was ready. What are we having Mum? asked Tom. Well, we are having Pan Cakes said Mum. At the table Dad was reading the newspaper, Mum was getting breakfast ready and his two brothers were waiting for their Pan Cakes to be cooked. Their names were Craig and Jiff. Craig was fourteen years old, Jiff was eleven and Tom was thirteen years old. We are going to the beach said Dad facing Tom. Do you want to come with us today? asked Craig looking at Tom. Mum was putting the Pan Cakes on the table when Tom told them that he wanted to stay at home today. But it will be over forty depress and we will have lots of fun said Mum. We leave at ten o'clock said Dad. Tom looked at the clock on the wall and it was nine o'clock. In one hour he will be alone to do his experiment. After breakfast Tom and the boys went to the bathroom to clean their teeth. In the kitchen Pam and David were sitting at the table finishing breakfast and they called to Tom. When Tom came, he sat down at the table. What is the problem? asked his Mum and Dad facing Tom. Nothing replied Tom. Why don't you want to come to the beach today? asked Mum. Because I have something important to do said Tom. Oh that's fine said Mum facing Tom. Pam looked at the clock and it was nine fifty. Craig and Jiff got ready and came to the kitchen. Dad said to Craig and Jiff, I need two men to put the beach things into the car. OK Dad said the two boys together. Pam was getting ready to go outside when Tom said to her, I'm sorry for not going to the beach. That's OK lov said Mum. Pam went outside and Tom followed her. David called to Pam, We are set to go now. Pam kissed Tom goodbye and got into the car. Tom waved goodbye to them as they drove off. So Tom went to his room. Tom went to switch on the radio and listened to it because he might hear more about the people who turn up side down. When Tom turned the radio to listened to it the news man said, Last night on Tonight Live at Mid Night were four people who turn up side down. We are going to asked them, what they had to mix up after this ad. Tom got a pad and a pen so he went to sit down to write down what they had mixed. After the ad, the news man said, It now six past ten and we have with us now, Tina, Jan, Peter and Cam. Tell us what did it feel like to be up side down Tina? Well, it was super to stand up side down replied Tina. Do you think that you want to be on the roof all the time Jan and Peter? asked the news man. No, I like to spent sometime up side down because I get air sick if I do it too long replied Jan. And the same question to you Peter? asked the news man. Yes, I would but after a while you canned get down replied Peter. Can you tell us now Cam. What is the mixture to turn yourself up side down? asked the news man. Well we mixed up in a blender Mexican Jumping Beans, Up Side Down Cake and Cactus Juice. Tom wrote down all the information that Cam said and turned off the radio. He went to the kitchen to see if all the ingredients he wanted were there. He have Cactus Juice, some Mexican Jumping Beans but no Up Side Down Cake, so he decided to go to the supermarket and buy one. After ten minutes he was back at home and said to himself, It's hot outside today. All the window were open so Tom decided to shut the windows. Tom went to get the blender and put the blender with all the other ingredients on the bender. Tom put all the ingredients into the blender and switched it on. When he turned the blender off and took the lid off, it smelt awful and looked like yellow paint. Tom got a cup and poured the drink into the cup. He closed his eyes and drank the mixture, he felt a little bit sick so he went to lay down on his bed and fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up again and got out of bed, he was standing up side down on the roof looking down at the floor. Everything else was up right. He took one step at a time and he found out, he could walk up side down. He looked at the clock and it read ten fifty-eight. Tom thought to himself, If I could switch on the radio, I could listen to the news at eleven o'clock to see if the news man tells, how Tina, Jan, Peter and Cam came back to being on the floor again. Tom saw a broom near his bedroom door so he walked to the door slowly. When he got there he reached down to get the broom and luckily using the broom up side down he was able to turned on the radio to listened to the news and the news man said, It's seven minutes past eleven and Tina, Jan, Peter and Cam told us after the interview if they stayed up side down more then six minutes, they have trouble getting down and they don't know what happens after six minutes. Tom looked at the clock and it was nine minutes past eleven. Tom thought, Oh no. I have been up side down about eleven minutes. Tom walked to the kitchen to see if he could use the phone. He could reach the phone but he couldn't reach the phone book because the phone book was on the floor. So he rang up 000 for help but the woman said, We are to busy now so if you can leave your phone number with us, we can ring you back in ten minutes. Thank you. So Tom gave his number to them. After sixteen minutes they rang back and said, We are sorry about before, what is your problem now? So Tom told her the problem and she asked him, Are you drunk? No. I am not drunk. And it is true and I need help replied Tom in a mad voice. Where are you? asked the woman. At 390 Bert St. in Footscray replied Tom. Someone will call in about ten minutes to work out how to get you down. Before Tom put the phone down he said, Hurry up in a mad voice. The next thing he saw was his Dad, Mum, Craig and Jiff were outside. So Tom stood up side down in the kitchen waiting for someone to come. Jiff came in and went to the kitchen to put some bags on the kitchen bench but when he saw Tom up side down, he dropped the bags and ran to get Mum and Dad. When Mum saw Tom up side down, she asked him, How in heck did you get yourself up side down Tom? If you can get the others, I can tell everyone what's happened to me. Mum went to get the others and they all listened to Tom story. Dad asked Tom, Who gave you this idea? Tom explained about last night. Do you know how long before you turn up right again? asked Dad. Well, when I was up side down I had the radio off and I got the broom to switch the radio on so that if they told how to get down again, I would know but they didn't say. After the interview they told the news man, how long before they came down and they said to him, after six minutes they turned up right again said Tom. The others looked at Tom in a funny way and Craig asked him, How long have you been up there? About one and a half hours said Tom. Oh no said the others together. Tom told them about how he phoned for help. The next thing they hear was a car pulling up outside the house. There was a knock on the door and David went to open it. My name is Dr. Tyson. And my name is Dr. John the third. Is this 390 Bert Street and someone name Tom living here who is up side down? asked Dr. Tyson. Yes. Do come in please Doctors. Tom is in the kitchen. There was in the kitchen and the two Doctors said together, Oh my God looking at Tom. David told them what happened to Tom. Is this exact Tom? asked David. Yes that's right replied Tom. Have you got all the things that you used? asked Dr. Tyson. Yes. All the things which I used are on the table replied Tom. Both Doctors looked at the things on the table and Dr. John asked the others Have you got Milk and Tomato because, if you have them, I think if we can mix all the things together and let Tom drink it, so Tom will turn around and walk on the floor like us. Pam went to get the milk and tomato and put them on the table where the Mexican Jumping Beans and Cactus Juice but not Up Side Down Cake. We don't need an Up Side Down Cake because Tom doesn't want to turn up side down again said Dr. John. He put the Mexican Jumping Beans, Cactus Juice, Milk and Tomato into the blender and turned it on. When it was mixed, he turned off the blender and it smelt awful and it looked awful and it looked like red paint. He handed the cup to Tom and he shut his eyes and drank it through a straw. Tom dropped the cup and he was asleep up side down. The next thing they saw was Tom standing up right again. Tom slowly opened his eyes and looked at his Mum and Dad in a funny way and asked, Are you up side down too? No we are not up side down too? No we are not up side down because you are standing on the floor said Dad. Tom looking down and said, Thank goodness and then to the two Doctor to say thank you. That's O.K said the two Doctor together. We have to be going now said Dr. Tyson looking at his watch. And they went to the door and said Good bye to them. When the Doctors were gone Tom went to put all the things into the bin. Dad asked him if tomorrow he wants to the beach with them. Yes, I'd love too replied Tom. The next week he started to improve to read. After five weeks he began to read very well. He started to feel good about himself at last. THE END |
