If you meet someone like me don’t assume their mental ability is the same as their physical ability. So don’t shout I’m not deaf and just because I cannot speak it doesn’t mean I cannot understand you. We all have some sort of a disability but some don’t seem to show it as much as others. I don’t want to get too serious as I have a great sense of humor, as everyone who knows me enjoys, and I love just getting out and having a good time.

Last year in August 2005 three people who have non vocal communication went up to Daylesford as part of the Words in Winter Community Festival to perform in front of about 40 people to get across that we are the same as you but can’t speak like you. Those people were Melinda Smith, who is an Artist/ Poet, also the Co-ordinator for the day. Viviane Ortolan who is a Poet and I as an Artist/Writer. I told one on my stories which everyone loved. My career, Chris Ryan read it out and he did a wonderful job. While he was reading it out to the audience mine and Melinda’s’ art works were shown on a screen in the background. Melinda and Viviane took turns to read out some of their poems. The audience really appreciated them.
Everybody enjoyed the perform, I know I did.

Communication Changes through out my life have changed a lot in the last 20 years or so. When I first started school in the early 80’s, it was basic and nobody expected much, because most people who can’t communication like me, didn’t get taught the skills needed or have the will power to ask. My first communication board was a picture board with words under each photo. Next I progressed to a board with phrases. It was big. Around the end of the 80’s electronics came in.

I was given a mini speak to use with my head pointer but it was big not mini, bigger than my communication board. It was too big for my wheelchair because I had to look round it to see where I was going. The only way I can use it was at a table and I can’t take a table around me all day long so in the late 90’s I gave the mini speak back and got an Epson, it was good but I used a foot switch with it for a couple of years and I could take it around with me. I didn’t like it because it was still a little big, but it didn’t worry me as much as the mini speak do, but the only thing that was getting on my nerves was the foot switch or plug was always breaking down. I gave the Epson back. I made a communication book by myself and used it instead.
In the early 2000’s electronics improved and I was offered another Light Writer. This time size is good. Sound is good. Easy to use and is portable. Its taken time but things are getting better in everything. In todays world it is better for us to communicate, because we can sms each others mobiles or we can sms onto the home landline also there is server where you can type by phone and another voice will say it for you and you will get a message back on you T.T.Y Phone or on the Telstra new phone but you need to ask about it.

For the last 15 years or so, I have a hands free phone which I can answer or ring someone without any help, and that mean I can use my Light Writer, if I need to use the phone. But I prefer talking to people over the Internet or by sms. Because to me, I can do all my talking to the other person without having a third or a fourth people in our communication. I can be like anybody else without using speech.

At the moment I am using a Dynawrite. It is easier to use with my computer. It has replaced my Lightwriter
