An introduction to Landcare
The Landcare ethic is the wellspring of the Landcare movement ... without it, none of the structures and support would function ... We should not forget this cornerstone as we build the edifice of Landcare.(Professor Brian Roberts, University of Melbourne) Landcare Ethic? Landcare Community? Landcare Action Landcare is about people working together to achieve a common purpose. It is the vision of the community that drives and sustains it. Landcare started back in 1986 at Winjallok in North Central Victoria when a group of farmers began to work together on the land management and natural resource conservation issues that they faced. They believed that to achieve any significant and lasting improvement to the landscape, they would need to work in a coordinated and united way. Since 1986, Landcare has evolved dramatically. It has captured the imagination and support of government, helped shape policy, lifted the profile of the environment high onto the national agenda and brought about a fundamental cultural change in people's thinking. Industry and business are now investing strongly in Landcare and the future that it is bringing to both communities and the nation. It is the epitome of Think Globally, Act Locally. Its community based approach allows individuals to work with their neighbours to change the world. Landcare is Australia's pre-eminent volunteer organization and one of its greatest success stories - one which we are proudly spreading overseas. At the 2003 National Landcare Conference in Darwin, over 700 delegates attended. 70 of them were international Landcarers from 14 different countries. At the same conference, one of the most recurring themes was that Landcare doesn't belong to government or agencies it belongs to you. At the end of the day, Landcare is about what you have in your heart. People, Partnerships, Participation
