Note : In accordance with club by-law 4.2 For safety reasons two club members must be present when club machinery is being used. Members are asked to note the following points in relation to the published safety rules. Only operate machines for which you are a club registered and approved user. Refer the the list beside each machine which shows approved and registered users. Safety guards must not be removed from any machine. Treated timber should not be used on any machine or in the work shop. Re-cycled timber must not be brought in to the club rooms. All members are required to complete the form below and return it to the Club Secretary before they will be permitted to a. attend safety courses for machine operation b. be permitted to be an authorised and registered user of club equipment unless otherwise approved by the club executive Index. Scroll saw safety rules P.7 Equipment users form General Safety Rules 1. Make sure that you are familiar with the entire operation of any machine that you will be operating. 2. Keep guards and covers on the machine you are operating in place and in working order. 3. Always use safety glasses, also use face or dust mask or dust extractor if cutting operation is dusty. Everyday eye glasses only have impact resistant lenses, they are not safety glasses. 4. Keep work area clean. Clustered areas and benches invite accidents. Tidy up after finishing. 5. Do not force tool. It will do a better and safer job at the rate for which it was designed. 6. Avoid accidental starting. Make sure switch is in OFF position before plugging in cord. 7. Disconnect tools before servicing and when changing parts such as blades, bits, cutters.( maintenance officer only ) 8. Do not overreach. Keep your proper footing and balance at all times. It is recommended that users wear rubber soled footwear. Keep floor clear of oil, scrap wood, etc. 9. Wear proper clothing. Loose clothing or jewellery may get caught in moving parts. Should you have long hair wear protective hair covering . 10. Use ear protection if it is a necessary part of the operation of the tool you are using. 11. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches. Form the habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from a machine before turning it on. Store these in the correct place. 12. Avoid dangerous environment. Do not use power tools in damp or wet locations. Keep your work area well illuminated. Do not use in explosive atmosphere (around paint, flammable liquids, etc.) 13. All visitors in our workshop should be kept at a safe distance from work areas especially while any unit is being operated- Lathe safety guards must be used when demonstrations are being carried out. 14. Use the proper tool for the task you are working on. Do not force tool or attachment to do a job for which it was not designed. 15. Maintain tools in top condition. Keep tools sharp and clean for best and safest performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. 16. Secure work. Use clamps or a vice to hold work, when practical. It is safer than using your hand to prevent round or irregularly shaped pieces from turning. 17. Check damaged parts. Before further use of the machine , a guard or other part that is damaged should be checked to ensure that it will operate properly and perform its intended function- check for alignment of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, any other conditions that may affect its operations. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced. ( maintenance officer only ) If the machine is unsafe, place the WARNING-DO NOT USE sticker on the machine and complete the details. Contact the club Maintenance Officer. The Maintenance Officer is the only person permitted to remove this sticker. 18. Use recommended accessories- Consult Owner's Manual or ask for advice . Use of improper accessories could be hazardous. 19. Never stand on the tool or attempt to stop an operating tool with your hands 20. Never leave a tool running and unattended. 21. Always remove cord plug from the electrical outlet when adjusting, changing parts or working on tool. 22. Switch off the machine correctly when you have finished using it.( at power point ) 23. Clean up your machine and work area when you have finished your task and return all tools to their proper storage area. 24. Extension leads must be kept on proper dispensers, and only use extension leads that have been properly tested. Band Saw Safety Rules 1. Adjust the upper guide to about 3.2 mm above the material being cut. 2. Make sure that the blade tension and blade tracking are properly adjusted. 3. Stop the machine before removing scrapwood pieces from the table. 4. Always keep hands and fingers away from the blade. 5. Check for proper blade size and type. 6. Do not attempt to saw stock that does not have a flat surface, unless a suitable support is used. 7. Hold material firmly and feed into the blade at a moderate rate. 8. Turn off the machine if material is to be backed out of an uncompleted cut. 9. Make “relief” cuts before cutting long curves. 10. Maintain proper adjustment of the blade guides and thrust bearings. 11. If a safety guard is fitted make sure it is used correctly. Pyrography Group Safety Rules 1. Observe the general safety rules of the club. 2. Make sure electrical leads are under the table so that no-one can trip on them. 3. Turn off the burner when leaving the table. 4. All burners are to be left in their holders. Safety rules for lathes. If you are not thoroughly familiar with the operation of wood lathes, obtain advice from your supervisor, instructor or other qualified person. Refer to the club register. 1. Never turn the lathe ON before clearing the lathe of all objects (tools, scraps of wood etc). 2 Always stand to one side of revolving wood where possible. 3. Examine set-up carefully before turning on the power. 4. Make sure the tool rest is adjusted as close to the work piece as possible 5. Make sure the tool rest height is adjusted properly. 6. Rotate work piece by hand to check clearance before engaging power. 7. Never adjust the tool rest while work piece is turning. 8. Remove the tool rest before sanding or polishing. 9. When turning between centres make sure the tailstock centre is snug against the work piece and locked. The tailstock centre should be lubricated if it is not a revolving /live/ball bearing centre. Suitable lubricants are beeswax or paraffin wax. 10. Never drive work piece into the drive centre when the drive centre is in the headstock. Set the drive centre into the work piece with a soft mallet prior to installing it into the headstock. 11. Never attempt to drive centrepieces into wood using the tailstock quill action. Impaction of centre into wood must be done with a mallet prior to installation between centres in the lathe. 12. Secure work between centres with light pressure from tailstock quill action. 13. Never loosen tailstock spindle or tailstock while work piece is turning 14. When faceplate turning, make sure work piece is securely fastened to the faceplate and that appropriate size faceplate and screws are used to properly support work piece. 15. When faceplate turning, make sure the screw fasteners do not interfere with the turning tool at the finished dimension of the work piece. 16. Rough cut work piece as close as possible to finished shape before installing on faceplate. 17. Examine work piece for flaws and test glue joints before placing work piece in lathe 18. Tighten all clamp handles before operating 19. When roughing off, do not jam tool (chisel) into workpiece or take too big a cut. 20. Use lowest speed when starting a new workpiece. 21. Always operate the lathe at the recommended speeds. Consult owner's manual for suggested speeds, or, use a speed to suit your capability. 22. Make all adjustments with power OFF 23. Make sure the work area is cleaned before leaving the machine when finished your work. Disconnect lathe from power source . 24. Should any part of your lathe be missing, damaged or fail, in any way, or any electrical component fail to perform properly, shut off switch and remove plug from the power supply outlet. Report to Maintenance Officer after placing the appropriate label on the machine. 25.To reduce the risk of injury, it is recommended that operators always wear safety glasses and face and head protection when operating any of the lathes , and an appropriate dust mask when sanding ( refer to 3) 26. Ensure safety screen is used when demonstrating. ( refer to 13 ) Table Saw Safety Rules. 1. Stand to the left of the work piece out of line with the work piece and make sure that no one else is standing behind the line of the work piece. 2. Adjust the saw blade to expose only about 4mm of the blade , in the case of carbide tooth blades expose the carbide. 3. Always use extreme caution when ripping any piece less than 15mm in width. Always use push sticks. 4. Never pass your hands over or around the saw blade. 5. Never rip stock less than 60cm long. 6. Do not perform any operation free hand. Always use the rip fence or mitre gauge for firm support. 7. Do not use the rip fence as a cut-off gauge when cross-cutting. Push it aside. 8. Provide adequate support to the rear and the sides of the table when working wide or long pieces. 9. If cutting mouldings do not run the stock between the fence and the cutter head. Use a wooden auxillary fence attached to the regular fence to protect the moulding head and the regular fence. 10. Kick back will be reduced if- a. the guard splitter and anti-kick back fingers are in place b. the work piece is not warped or twisted c. the work piece has one straight edge against the rip fence d. the saw blade is sharp and aligned with the splitters and the rip fence e. height of blade is no more than 5mm above the timber thickness 11. The work piece is always pushed all the way past the saw blade. Do not attempt to remove the work piece by bringing it back across the blade. 12. Never attempt to free a stalled saw blade without turning the saw off first. Turn the power switch off immediately to prevent damage to the motor. 13. Make sure the blade is tight , the tilt adjust lock knob is tight, the fence is properly secure, the mitre gauge lock knob is tight. Radial Arm Saw Safety Rules 1. Always disconnect the saw from the power before making any adjustments 2. Ensure all guards are correctly positioned and all clamping handles are tightened before starting the machine. 3. Wear protective eye shields when using the saw 4. Make sure that the sides of the blade and the arbor collars or flanges are clean and that the recessed sides of the collars are against the blade. 5. Make sure the arbor nut is securely tightened using both the allen key and spanner provided. 6. Before switching on to make a cut , make sure that the fence is in the correct position. The blade should not contact the material until you pull the saw carriage forward. 7. When ripping always use the riving knife and anti-kickback fingers in their correct positions. 8. Only feed the material into the blade at a speed so that it can be cut comfortably. 9. Do not make any adjustments to the saw unless you are authorised Triton Owners Group Safety Rules 1. These rules for operating the Triton equipment are in addition to the general safety rules of the Club. 2. All equipment can only be operated with one of the Triton Owners Group members in attendance. 3. All Triton equipment is to have all safety guards/devices in operational mode whilst the equipment is in use. 4. All equipment is to be operated as per the instructions of the various Triton Operating Manuals. 5. All equipment damage or malfunction is to be reported to the Club’s Maintenance Officer immediately. Scroll Saw Safety The most basic of all rules is the rule of common sense Rules to be followed 1. Choose the correct blade for the job. 2. Put the blade in the saw the correct way (teeth facing down). 3. Tighten the blade to the correct tension. Pluck the blade when loose and it will sound dull and then when it is tight it will sound the note of “C, or push the blade sideways- blade must not move no more than 1/8” (no more than this). 4. Make sure table is square - table and blade 90 degrees to each other. 5. Get comfortable before starting the saw. Do not get comfortable when the saw is going. 6. Keep hands and fingers away from the front of the blade at all times. 7. When cutting small pieces of stock glue them to a larger piece of cardboard. This will assist to keep fingers away from the blade. 8. Always use a dust mask when cutting MDF or other abrasive dusts. Equipment Users Form. …………………………………….please detach……………………………………..
