The History of the Bendigo District Bowls Assoc Inc,
The earliest records available for the Association are from 1890 when it was known as the North West Bowling Association. It apparently carried on under that name until 1925-26 when a change was made to the Northern Bowling Association and finally in 1933-34 it became the Bendigo District Bowling Association.
In 1950 there were 11 clubs affiliated -Bendigo (1890), Eaglehawk (1890), Castlemaine (1890), Heathcote (1904), South Bendigo (1905), Bendigo Golf,(1914) , Golden Square (1922), Inglewood (1930), Bridgewater (1934), Kangaroo Flat (1945), & Bendigo East (1948).
Today the Association comprises of 23 clubs and the years of their affiliation are as follows- White Hills (1951), Harcourt (1955), Calivil (1963), Dingee (1964), Campbells Creek(1965), VRI (1965), Serpentine (1965), North Bendigo (1966), Woodbury (1976), Lockwood South (1981), Marong (1984), Strathfieldsaye (1985).
The Bendigo District Ladies Bowling Association is a separate organization which caters solely for ladies.
The BDBA has around 1500 members of which more than 1000 play Pennant bowls each Saturday during the Pennant bowls Season.
The Clubs having over 90 members are- Bendigo East 121, Kangaroo Flat 150, Bendigo 129, South Bendigo 99, Golden Square 99 & Eaglehawk 99.
The BDBA is affiliated with the Royal Victorian Bowls Assn and through that organization Bowls Australia. The RVBA has a web site with information on the structure of the organization with photos of our two district Councillors ( Mr Ken Gullick & Mr Athol Mills ) who will be continuing on for the 2008/9 Season.
