Avon Channels
(Jim Stranger) DATE: Wednesday 18 October LEADER: Wil Streckfuss After meeting at the Newry Mechanics Institute, nine intrepid walkers headed off on a perfect spring morning to the Avon Channels. Arriving at the start of the walk, probably after the second or so cuppa, we pondered on how the other half were surviving. Without getting too bogged down with concern for those at the coalface, we plunged down to the river, stopping many times on the way to admire and photograph the numerous wildflowers. There was a surprising amount of water in the Avon, despite the extreme dry conditions. Rocky cliffs towered above and the Channels themselves drew comments of Katherine Gorge on a smaller scale. A relaxing lunch on the river's edge and a quick dip for one hardy soul, and we were on our way back to the cars. Thank you to Wil for leading the walk, and to Bev for helping Wil conduct the recce.
