BCWC -- Walk Report - Thomson River Walk

Thomson River Walk
(Lorraine Bull)

DATE: Sunday 27 August
LEADER: Kath Tisdale

Today a group of 19 new and old friends met at Tyers, and carpooled to the Thomson River bridge, near the station for the Walhalla steam train. It was ideal walking weather: cool and overcast. We trekked, single file, along the narrow track overlooking the broad Thomson River. The track paralleled in the river through beautiful lush tree ferns and gullies, and over several small streams which tinkled towards the river. We saw many lyrebird scratchings, listened to birds and found evidence of other animals. Cath found maroon-hooded orchids hidden amongst green undergrowth. We laughed and chattered and had a close encounter with two very fit joggers, and many squirmy leeches.

Poverty Point bridge is a 46-metre-long cast-iron bridge, construct and across the Thomson River in 1900 to enable firewood to be brought to the Walhalla Long Tunnel goldmine.

Lunch by the river was most welcome and was followed by a short visit to the historic town of Walhalla for some of us. Walhalla is situated in the steep valley of Stringer's Creek and is popular with day visitors. Many old buildings and cottages still survive, including the Star Hotel, museum, Post Office, Fire Station and bandstand. Unfortunately, there was no time to visit the Long Tunnel mine, but there is always the possibility of another walk to look forward to.
