| Nowa Nowa Gorge and Cherry Tree Creek Rainforest Walks
Date: Sunday 22 October Distance: 5 kms Grade: Very easy We start this walk in the car park opposite the timber mill at Nowa Nowa. We will go to the Gorge lookout which is only a 2 minute walk then proceed back along the gorge on what is actually labelled the Boggy Creek Walk. This continues on to the wetlands walk along the banks of the estuary linking to Lake Tyers. We return to the car park and drive to Burnt Bridge/Cherry Tree Creek track and will do the Rainforest walk which will only take about 30 minutes. We will return to Lakes Entrance about 1 pm to a BBQ at Bill’s place at 12 Bronsdon Street. Everything provided. Cost $1 each. *************************************************** McMillan Track Maintenance Date: Saturday 21 — Monday 23 October The plan is to look at the section of track that goes up the Moroka River from the junction with the Wonnangatta River. Our campsite is on the Wonnangatta just below the junction with plenty of room for tents. We need to check and do some work along this remote part of the track. This is a great opportunity to come and have a walk in this remote and beautiful part of the mountains named by the old timers “Moroka Glen”. Every body is most welcome to join us. There is no obligation to work; just come and enjoy the country and a general good old campout. We will camp with our vehicles so bring along your home comforts. *************************************************** McLoughlin's Beach Date: Sunday 29 October Grade: Easy, 5 kms We will walk across the footbridge and along the shoreline of the estuary for ~ 1.5 kms then across a headland of similar distance to the entrance — this involves a bush bash of about 200 metres. Lunch on the beach at the entrance. After suitable replenishment, we will travel along the 90 Mile beach for ~ 2 kms then stroll through the tea-tree and banksia bushland back to the car park. *************************************************** Mt Tamboritha to Melbourne Grammar camp via The Crinoline Date: Sat/Sun 04/05 November Grade: Hard This walk comprises an easy first day, ambling down a gentle spur that contains the greatest concentration of lyrebirds your leader has ever encountered. We camp for the night above Long Hill creek, and after setting up our tents we can wander down to the edge of the precipice and gaze on the Crinoline and hopefully the waterfall as the creek plunges into the abyss. Day two is a completely different proposition. We scramble along an increasingly narrower rocky ridge to the northern side of the Crinoline, and then wend our way up to the summit. From then on the walk is steeply down to Smith Street, followed by a well-graded descent to the car. We need sufficient 4WD vehicles for a car shuffle, the actual number depending on the number of walkers involved. Please book early for this walk, as the transport arrangements need to be organised. *************************************************** Club Meeting * * * * New Venue * * * * Rosedale Community House Date: Wednesday 08 November Place: Rosedale Community House, cnr Cansick Street and Willung Road, Rosedale Time: 8 pm A fair proportion of the membership of Ben Cruachan Walking Club lives in the valley. Changing the venue from Maffra is an invitation to those who, understandably, consider the 60 kms from Traralgon to Maffra (and more if you live further west) to be a lot of kms to travel for a meeting. LVites, this is an opportunity to test a much shorter travel distance and see if it is feasible and enjoyable. You can all talk about the new venue on Alex’s walk the next weekend….... *************************************************** Noojee Area Date: Sunday 12 November Grade: Easy, 9.5 kms This will be a series of walks in the Noojee area incorporating the beautiful Taronga Falls and other scenic spots and areas of interest. There is a short, steep climb up to the falls. *************************************************** Great Ocean Walk Date: Sunday 12 to Sunday 19 November Fully subscribed *************************************************** Mc Tk — Wood’s Point Date: Sat 18 — Monday 20 November Travel in convoy across the mountains via Licola, Connors Plain, Mt Selma and Matlock. We need to return to Woods Point to finish some track work we started before winter and install a new sign near the start of the track. Our campsite is on the banks of the Goulburn River which is a beautiful mountain stream this high up; the place is called Gooleys Creek, the site of the first gold discovery in the area, so bring your prospecting gear and join us. A couple of walks are planned and it is only a short stroll back into the Point, which is worth a look around, for anybody interested in a bit of history it is here. Once again, everybody is most welcome to join us with out any obligation to work. Some of these places are normally off our list of places to see, but are well worth a look when the opportunity arises. *************************************************** Wirilda Track Date: Sunday 26 November Grade: Medium — Hard; 15 kms The walk is over rough tracks following the Tyers River through the Tyers Gorge. The recent fires have affected half of the walk, adding to the its interest, but obscuring the track in some areas. Peregrine Falcons nest in the Gorge and were sighted during the recce. There are a few ascents and some scrambly rocky areas, which, combined with the distance, have led to the grading of medium-hard. The walk is expected to take 5½ to 6 hours. The meeting point is the Wirilda Environment Park Education Centre (VicRoads p97, J4). Turn north off the Moe-Glengarry Road, immediately west of it’s juncture with the Tyers River. From here, after a sharp LH bend, take the first road to the right. The Wirilda building is the second building on the right. A car shuffle will be required to the starting point at the Moondarra Dam wall. The walk is being jointly run with the Strzelecki BWC. *************************************************** Morwell NP — Orchids Date: Tuesday 28 November Grade: Easy, 6 kms Proclaimed in 1967, Morwell National Park is an area of natural beauty. It is best known as a habitat for over 40 species of native orchid and has regional significance as one of the few remaining remnants of the original Strzelecki Ranges forest, including some warm temperate rainforest and fern gullies We will meet at the Kerry Road picnic area, off Jumbuck Road. After having a look at orchids we will walk the two tracks, Foster’s Gully Nature Walk (which provides the visitor with detailed information on the variety of plants and animals found in the park) and the Billy’s Creek Area After walking, we will have lunch and an early finish to the day. *************************************************** Mt St Gwinear to Stronach’s Old Mill Site Date: Sat 02 — Sunday 03 December Grade: Medium This is an excellent introductory overnight walk for anyone starting out on his or her bushwalking career. We drive up to the St. Gwinear car park, and then carry out a long car shuffle up to Stronach’s. The track climbs gently for the first 4 km to the Rock Shelter, where we join the Alpine Walking Track. As far as the turn off to the Baw Baw ski village, the track is open and easy to follow. After that the bushes on either side of the track close in on the walkers – very annoying if the weather is wet. We camp for the night near an old hut site – the hut was burnt down during the 1939 bush fires. The campsite overlooks a sphagnum moss basin that is one of the sources of Melbourne’s water supply. Next day we continue along the Alpine Track to the Upper Thomson Road and our cars. Each day’s walk only takes about 4 hours and there are no long steep climbs involved. Please book early for this walk, as the transport arrangements need to be organised. *************************************************** Port Albert Heritage Trail Date: Wednesday 06 December Grade: Easy, We start the walk at the Port Albert Caravan Park and follow the track along the seaside. We hope to arrive at the Port Albert jetty at lunchtime, where we either consume our own lunch, or buy fish and chips at the jetty. After lunch we follow the same track back to the cars. It will look different from this side and it is an enjoyable and easy walk both ways (no hills!!). *************************************************** Club Meeting Date: Wednesday 13 December Place: 8 pm @ Maffra Vet Centre, 10 Johnson Street, Maffra Back to Maffra Vet Centre. Part of this evenings meeting will be to assess having the November meeting in Rosedale. If you wish to have an input into where the club has it’s meetings, please contact one of the committee members, better still, come along to a meeting and have your say. *************************************************** Christmas Stroll & Social & BBQ Date: Saturday 16 December RSVP: 08 December Ho, Ho, Ho. It’s nearly Christmas. The committee has decided on a different Christmas idea this year. Our Christmas get-together will be at Walhalla and we want it to be a family occasion. After gathering at various places we will proceed to Walhalla meeting there at a point to be decided. For those who feel the urge to work up an appetite before the BBQ lunch, there will be a walk up to the cricket ground. The BBQ, salads, bread, condiments, cutlery and crockery will be supplied. Just bring your own meat and drinks plus chairs, sunhats, cricket gear, frisbees, tall tales, etc. Some of our members will be making plum puddings for our dessert. Yum. Please RSVP by Friday 08 December to Sheila Johnson. Get into the Christmas theme by wearing something red, green (or both) or a Christmas novelty. *************************************************** New Year in the Mountains — Mc Tk Maintenance — Christmas Working Bee Date: Thu 28 to 01 January 2007 Place: Thomas Town Base camp will be at Thomas Town; it is sign-posted about half way between Tamboritha Saddle and Lost Plain. There is car access to the campsite and plenty of room for camps and water nearby. Everybody welcome, come and go as you please. We will be working on the track in the general area. A New Year’s Day Walk is planned for in the area with a couple of options available. We do need an itinerant leader to meet day walkers at Glenmaggie on New Year’s Day. If not we will meet at campsite. |
