The Rising Star award, sponsored by the Bendigo Bank, is an "encouragement" award for athletes under 23 years of age rather than an award for the "Elite" athlete. To be considered for the award athletes will be required to have competed at Bendigo on a regular basis and to have shown a significant improvement in achievement. Performances are recognized from Athletics Australia, Athletics Victoria., Athletics Bendigo and Athletics Bendigo club controlled events.

After a breakthrough track season where he consistently ran under two minutes for 800m and made the final in the National Under 20 1500m Cody has shown his versatility as a distance athlete with improved performances over distances from 3200m to 10km.
Cody has improved his times for 5km and 10km on the same courses by more than a minute and at the same time was placed second and third respectively in the Under 20 State Championships over both distances.He is also one of the leading athletes in the Bendigo Region Division One Team in the Athletics Victoria XR09 Series.
