| The Andrew Ross Museum was established in 1993 in the old schoolhouse (built circa 1878) in Kangaroo Ground, Victoria. The Museum is dedicated to interpreting the life and times of Andrew Ross and the history of Kangaroo Ground from indigenous to early white settlement.
Through the hard work and dedication of its volunteers the Museum is now fully accredited with Museums Australia (Victoria). We maintain collections that include the old schoolhouse building itself, artefacts of local significance, a photographic collection and an extensive archive of documents relating to the district and host changing exhibitions. The Museum has been involved in the publication of many important volumes of local history, a book of local verse and has produced two plays based on local historical themes. In addition to these activities we run outreach programs that include tours of local icons such as the Church, Memorial Tower, Cemetery and Gawa Aboriginal Resource Trail and run educational programs for local school students. Why 'Andrew Ross' Museum? Andrew Ross was a Scottish immigrant who became the first schoolmaster in the region as well as a keen recorder of contemporary life and he left a remarkable written legacy to the Kangaroo Ground community. Ross established an Industrial Boarding school in Kangaroo Ground in 1851 as well as a hotel, store/post office, was Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, started the Evelyn Observer newspaper, was a member of the Roads Board and Cemetery Trust and maintained a daily diary throughout his life. He was therefore an important figure in the white settlement of Kangaroo Ground as well as an important source to us for information about that time. |
