About Ali Rizvi

My basic training is in Philosophy with forays into Sociology and Political Economy. Within Philosophy my immediate interests are Continental Philosophy and Moral and Political Philosophy. I studied Philosophy at University of Karachi, Continental Philosophy at University of Warwick. Currently I am in the final year of writing my Ph.D thesis at La Trobe University. My PhD. deals mainly with the work of Habermas. I am trying to put forth and defend a thesis that Habermas' work is based on and implies what I call Ontology of Freedom. My thesis is an exposition of what Ontology of Freedom means in the context of Habermas' work and suggests possible lines of critique. The purpose of my thesis is to try to understand, interpret and critically assess Habermas’ claims about going beyond ‘transcendence-less empiricism and high flying idealism that glorifies transcendence’. It is the aim of this thesis to elaborate and make clear the logic of any such undertaking.

Previously in my MA and MPhil dissertations I have written on Foucault's relationship with Kant (or more precisely a Kantian reading of Foucault) and Foucault's analysis of capitalism and the possibility of system-wide resistance.

I have taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in the University of Karachi, Institute of Business Management Karachi, and tutored in the Philosophy Programme and also the Department of Management and Accounting, at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. I have also been Managing editor of Pakistan Business Review (January 2000 to December 2001). I have published widely on topics within Continental Philosophy, Political Economy, and Modernist Post Modernist debate.
