Euroa Community Education Centre has been successful in obtaining funding through the My Connected Community Project, which will encourage community groups located in Victoria to create their own online communities of interest.
Working closely with leaders of community groups including cultural and sporting clubs, associations, special interest groups. The My Connecting Community project will provide these groups with the support and tools needed to build an online community. In announcing this initiative, Dianne McMillan, ECEC Project Manager stated,
"Through My Connected Community , community groups will be able to establish their own online groups. Training and technical support will be provided to members to enable them to do this. By participating in My Connected Community, community groups and their individual members will be able to interact with others with similar interests, contribute to chat sessions, participate in forum discussions with other members, check out the diary of community events and visit recommended sites on favourite topics".
Euroa Community Education Centre already serves as a model in the adult, community and education sector for its networking and partnership with other adult and community education providers and with other community organisations, business and industry. My Connected Community will build on this existing model to become an innovative example of how the Internet can be used to enchance and extend existing programs. Mrs McMillian added.
My Connected Community will benefit from experience and expertise gained through a twenty-five year association with the local community. In recent times Euroa Community Education Centre has extended its outreach program to include such communities as Violet Town, Longwood, and Nagambie. During term three a bank of laptop computers was used to deliver computer and Internet training in these locations. Plans are currently underway to extend the delivery of training in rural locations in 2002.
Clubs to be contacted shortly include service clubs, tourism and business associations, farming and landcare organisations and hobby groups such as garden clubs or historical societies. Other special interest groups such as writers groups will also have the opportunity to meet like-minded people online. A connection has already been made between local writers and others from Diamond Creek and this link will be strengthened through the availability of My Connected Community.
My Connected Community is an initiative of the Victorian Government funded through Multimedia Victoria and co-ordinated by VICNET.
