From the Member for Brunswick
23 February 2006
"The Brunswick Neighbourhood House was awarded a My Connected Community grant to set up five new online groups, helping a wide range of people - including unemployed people, women from non-English speaking backgrounds, recent migrants and people with disabilities," Mr Carli said.
The My Connected Community grants help community groups develop websites, publish online and establish online discussion forums. Creating content specifically relevant for disadvantaged Victorians, these projects create new opportunities for members to interact with each other online, and also to meet similar groups elsewhere in the state, the country and the world.
The My Connected Community project, launched today at Brunswick Neighbourhood House, has already helped many people find advice, assistance and friendship.
"Brunswick Neighbourhood house has been supporting and mentoring single-mothers for more than 13 years, and their new online community has really made an enormous difference to supporting these women and helping them overcome the loneliness they often face.
"Now they can keep each other company online in the evenings, as well as access training and advice with just a click, and without having to be away from their children," said Ms Penny Abrahams, General Manager at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House.
The new online groups mean that these people can now all meet in a safe space to talk, share information and find understanding from others who share their experiences.
"The Bracks Government is committed to providing all Victorians, no matter their circumstances, the opportunity to get online and have access to content that is meaningful and relevant to them," said Carlo Carli.
"Since the My Connected Community program was established in 2001, $2.65 million has been provided to 96 organisations, creating more than 3,400 online groups and around 49,000 registered users."
"Through the Bracks Government's vision for A Fairer Victoria, more Victorians have the opportunity to share in and participate in their communities."
