Blocking Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) in Internet Explorer (IE)

For those using Internet Explorer (IE), there's a setting that should help reduce the possibility of Browser Helper/Hijack Objects (BHOs) taking over your browser. If you can do without the Google or Yahoo toolbar in IE (because it requires the BHO feature) you can turn off the BHO feature by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Tools menu item in Internet Explorer
  2. Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu
  3. Select the Advanced tab
  4. Ensure Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) is NOT ticked
  5. Click OK, as shown below:

How to turn off Windows Scripting Host

This default feature in Windows may be an open invitation to VBS worms.

Virus outbreaks have exploited known vulnerabilities in Visual Basic Scripting under Windows. For example, NewLove and ILOVEYOU both contained attachments ending in .vbs which the user must click on to become infected. In order to limit the risk of infection, users of Windows should turn off Windows Scripting Host. Doing so will prevent you from executing .vbs scripts by double-clicking.

How To Remove:

  1. Open "My Computer"
  2. Select "Tools/Folder Options"
  3. Click on File Types tab
  4. Find VBScript Script File
  5. Select Delete
  6. Click OK
