Can't upload/post a large file?
Files can be "posted", or
uploaded, from several locations on the site: My Files, Group files, Shared Files etc.
Primarily, mc² seeks to encourage and enable online interaction between Victorian community members, e.g. via the use of Chat, Forum, Links etc. mc² was not established with the sole intention of creating an international file server. Intensive use of the file management system by some users, can impact on the quality of service we are able to provide to all users.
Consequently, to ensure the continued efficient functioning of mc2, and to preserve bandwidth and webspace for all users; mc² staff reserve the right to impose a limit on the maximum permissible file size and to remove without notice, files exceeding this limit. This is detailed in the Code of Conduct.
- Can't upload/post a large file? Maybe you exceeded your Webspace? Personal Webspace has a total limit of 10MB, and Groups have 50MB total webspace on our server.
- To preserve bandwidth for all users, there is also a maximum individual file size, currently 3 Mb
Files larger than this limit will be deleted after upload
- If you have a legitimate reason to upload files in excess of this limit, contact us, or use FTP
-
If you are using a proxy setting in your browser, there may be a restriction that will not allow you to upload large files. For example, the Vicnet proxy will not allow files in excess of 1MB. You can bypass the proxy restriction by not using the proxy for specified addresses, e.g. the mc² site. Note that this will still not allow you to exceed the current limit on the maximum permissible file size!
To bypass the proxy, in the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, IE 5, click on Tools > Internet options > Connections > LAN Settings. Look at the proxy settings, then select "Advanced". In the box "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with", enter the mc² site addresses:

Forum and Mailing List
- Each group has a Forum, to which all members are subscribed to by default.
- The Forum sends forum message notification via email.
- All Forum replies must be made via the mc² website, however.
- The owner can also establish an email Mailing List for the group.
- All posts & replies to the Mailing List must be made via email
[though posts can be reviewed via a Web archive].
- The mailing list name is set by the owner when the group is created,
and is the same as the Group Webspace name that is chosen.
For more details see the Mailing List Help page, which outlines the differences between a Web-based Forum and an email-based Mailing List.
Remember, individuals can add/remove themselves from the list by going to My Communities.
Weird (unreadable) Characters in Forum Email
If you see weird or unreadable characters in the
Forum, and/or associated emails, it may be an encoding problem in your
browser or
email client. Certain non-standard characters may not render correctly, unless you select the correct encoding, which is
Unicode UTF-8. This is especially a problem with foreign languages, such as Chinese or other non-
ASCII characters, such as MS Word's use of "smart quotes".
If you see a series of squares, instead of recognizeable characters, you may need to install the correct language fonts, e.g. Chinese. For Windows, this can be done either from the Microsoft Website, or from the original operating system installation CD.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can easily change the Encoding in your browser, if necessary.
Just right click on on any page and select Encoding > Unicode (UTF-8)
How to Unsubscribe
What do you want to unsubscribe from?
- To stop getting email from an mc² group you are a member of:
- login to the site to get the My Communities view
- uncheck options for the community you no longer wish to receive mail from
[Forum, Alerts, Mailing List]
- click on "Update Details"
- For more details, see: My Communities and email notifications
You will still be a group member, but no longer receive email notification of forum postings or alerts to other new content for the community. If your group has the Mailing List feature activated, you can remove yourself from the Mailing List, by unchecking the appropriate box.
If this does not seem to remove you from the list, for any reason, or if you are no longer a member of the list you are still getting mail from, contact us.
- To unsubscribe from a group/community in mc2:
- login to the site
- click on the name of the community you wish to unsubscribe from
- click on unsubscribe [bottom left]
- you are now no longer a member of that group/community
- you are still an individual member of mc2, with your own personal webspace [to host your webpage and files]
- you are still able to login to mc² and join other groups/communities
- Being Unsubscribed / Removed from a Group by a Moderator
If you break the
Code of Conduct, you may be Unsubscribed / Removed from the Group by the Owner or Moderator. See below: Removing a Member
Removing a Member - Notes for Owners and Moderators
All members of mc² have to abide by the
Code of Conduct. This basically says "be nice, or you can't play!". We want mc² to be a safe, secure environment for people to share their experiences and engage with others. Bad behaviour will not be tolerated. See
Code of Conduct re Owners/Moderators
If people break the rules and harass anyone or are offensive, then they can be prevented from using mc2... at the bottom of every mc² page it says:
"mc2, group owners and moderators, reserve the right to remove any content deemed inappropriate and any user in breach of the Code of Conduct"
So, how do you do this? The owner or moderator can warn the offender first, by email or by 1-on-1 chat with them in the chatroom, or simply go to the "Members" section for the group, and click "Remove". This kicks them out of the group.
If you want them to be prevented from applying to enter again, you can also request that mc² staff suspend their account. This is an extreme measure, as it will then stop them from logging in or using mc² entirely, regardless of group!
If you want to stop banned members entering an mc² chatroom via the "back door" of a third party IRC client, such as mIRC, then you need to request that your chatroom be password protected, see: mIRC chat added security. This means only mc² members can enter your chatroom.
mIRC users will need to know the password. They will only know it if you tell them, or if they login as a member and request it be sent to them [read onsite chat help: mIRC chat added security]. If the password becomes publically known, just request that it be changed to a new password.

Removing duplicate Memberships
If your name ends up on the list of any groups members twice, there are a couple of things you can do:
- Unsubscribe. This will remove both memberships, then subscribe (join) again. If you choose this option, please ensure that you don't double-click on the subscribe form YES button (only a single-click is required), as this is what creates the double membership.
- Alternatively you could just leave the double membership as is. It will not
affect the workings of your membership or the workings/maintenance of the group. It will only be the visual impact of seeing two memberships.
If you require further clarification, please do not hesitate to let us know: mc2@vicnet.net.au
