Unicode
A standard for representing characters as numbers. Unicode uses 16 bits bits for each character, which means that it can represent more than 65,000 unique characters. This is a bit of overkill for English and Western-European languages, but it is necessary for some other languages, such as Chinese. See also UTF-8

Uninstall
Removing a program from your computer. This may require changes to the Registry and Rebooting (restarting) your computer. See also install.

UNIX
Multi-user, multitasking operating system developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. Due to its portability, flexibility, and power, UNIX has become the leading operating system for workstations and mainframes. Historically, it has been less popular in the personal computer market, but the emergence of a new version called Linux is revitalizing UNIX across all platforms.

Upload
The process of sending a copy of files on your computer up to a remote location [e.g. a server]. To update a Webpage requires uploading the new file, e.g. by using FTP. See also download

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
Put simply, an URL is a Web address. Each link on a webpage goes to a specific URL. You can slao type the URL for the site you want to visit in the address bar at the top of your browser window, then click "Go" (or hit "Enter" on the keyboard). Whilst email addresses have an @ symbol in them, URLs often start with www. Not all URLs have "www" in them, however, e.g. the URL for My Connected Community (mc²) is mc2.vicnet.net.au

USB - Universal Serial Bus
USB is the way most peripheral devices - printer, mouse, keyboard, modem etc. - connect to a computer. It replaces the old serial and parallel ports.

UTF-8 - Universal Transformation Format
Converts Unicode to 8-bit bytes. UTF-8 is the character set the mc² website uses in the <HEAD> section of the HTML for it's webpages. The tag used is: <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-type" Content="text/html; charset=utf-8">. This allows for double-byte characters, such as Chinese, to be displayed.

In the mc² communities, you can use any language supported by the UTF-8 character set, as long as it is also supported by your browser. This means that you can post Forum entries, Guestbook comments, Notices, Events, Polls, and Link descriptions in a language of your choice: Chinese, Russian etc. You can also input foreign languages into the Webpage Generator to create pages that include text such as:
