Server
A computer attached to a network that stores data, manages printers & network traffic. A web server, "serves up" webpages to people's browsers, via the Internet. The Internet Explorer browser is a client program that allows users to retrieve information from the various servers which store Webpages. The server is responsible for transmitting the data and the client is responsible for displaying it. You can view the main mc² servers in the Vicnet Computer Room. A mail server is a computer that stores peoples email on it. When your mailbox is full, you will need to delete mail from the server, before you can receive new mail. See also mc² WebMail.

Smileys  :- )
To save typing, or add emotions or emphasis to typed messages, e.g. in chat rooms, people use emotional icons (emoticons) or "smileys" These are composed of a few text characters, and used as a kind of emotional shorthand to add meaning to a message. For example, an emoticon may be used at the end of a comment to indicate that the comment was not intended to be taken seriously ;-) Most emoticons are designed to be interpreted with the viewer's head tilted over to the left.

Software
Electronically stored information that instructs the computer how to behave. Software is often divided into two categories:

The storage devices (e.g. hard drive) and display devices (e.g. monitor) are hardware.

Spam (Junk mail, Bulk mail)
Unsolicited email messages, often advertising a product, "get rich quick" scheme, or adult sites. Spammers buy email lists and trawl the Internet for email addresses. Spam may also involve phishing scams or contain viruses. The mc² Code of Conduct does not permit users to send spam. Various software filtering products exist in an endeavour to limit spam, but none can be said to be 100% effective, due to the difficulty in automatically differentiating spam from legitimate email. Spider  (or robot)
A program that automatically fetches Webpages. Spiders are used to feed pages to Search Engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the Web. Another term for these programs is webcrawler. See also: The Web Robots Pages

Spyware
Also called adware, spyware is any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without their knowledge. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about email addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Spyware is similar to a Trojan horse in that users unwittingly install the product when they install something else.

Because spyware exists as independent executable programs, they have the ability to monitor keystrokes, scan files on the hard drive, snoop other applications, such as chat programs or word processors, install other spyware programs, read cookies, change the default home page on the browser, consistently relaying this information back to the spyware author who will either use it for advertising/marketing purposes or sell the information to another party.

Streaming
A technique for transferring data in a continuous stream, e.g. radio (audio) or movie (video) images. With streaming, the client browser or plug-in can start displaying the data before the entire file has been transmitted - useful when bandwidth is limited, e.g. when using a modem. If the streaming client receives the data more quickly than required, it needs to save the excess data in a buffer. If the data doesn't come quickly enough, however, the presentation of the data will not be smooth, hence jerky video or erratic speech occurs over slow modem connections. There are a number of competing streaming technologies e.g. Real Audio. See also: webcam and webcast

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
A high level security protocol for protecting the confidentiality & security of data while it's transmitted over the Internet.
