Encryption
The coding of information (in a file or email), as it travels over a network, to make it unreadable to those who do not have access to the encryption scheme. Passwords are often encrypted for security, e.g. passwords for mc² Group Files password protected directories.

Email (Electronic Mail)
Emails are messages sent and received electronically over the Internet. Files and digital photos can also be attached and sent along with text. Email can also be sent automatically to a large number of addresses via a Mailing List. An email address consists of a username, an @ symbol and a domain name, e.g., myname@mc2.vicnet.net.au.
