Group Files
The
Group Files section of a group allows you to access the contents of the
Group Webspace. All members have "read" access to group files, but only owners & moderators have "write" access. This means that only owner/moderators can
upload and delete files, but everyone can view or download them. The
shared_files area is the only one of the folders/directories in the Group Files area that allows ordinary members to upload. Thus the Group Files area is more controlled and more flexible than the Shared Files folder.
Owners/moderators can upload any computer files they want members to access: Newsletters, Word or text documents, spreadsheets, minutes, sound files, etc. For example, if you have an online chat organised, you could make supporting documents available in here in advance, so people can read about the topic or speaker before the chat.
- Unlike the Shared Files area, there are no email notifications of new files.
- Unlike the Shared Files area, only owner/moderators can upload files
- Unlike the Shared Files area, owner/moderators can create as many folders/directories as required. This allows for more comprehensive file management.
The web folder is hidden from the Group Files view, as it is reserved for use by the Webpage Generator. The contents of the web folder can, however, be viewed via the Webpages feature. Web can also be accessed via Group Webpage (using the Webpage Generator) and/or by using FTP.
Rules for File Names:
- Do not use S P A C E S in filenames: use_underscores_instead
- Keep File Names short
- Only use letters and numbers: a-z and 0-9
- Do NOT use "special" characters: $ ' " * % / & # @ ! etc.
- If necessary, rename files before uploading
To avoid potentially spreading viruses, executable files [.exe] are not permitted. You should also avoid uploading large files that will take other modem users forever to download! Be sure not to breach copyright by uploading images etc. that belong to others - see the Code of Conduct.
