Tips for Moderating a Chat
- A quick response
When you start to chat, start off with something quick - for example "Hi Kevin!" so that the other chatters know that you are there and are responding to them. Try not overload other chatters with long paragraphs of chat - it can slow the conversation down.
- Await a response
After sending a chat message try and wait until the other chatter(s) send you an reply before sending another chat. Too much too quickly can confuse the other chatters and they may not be able to follow the chat.
- Make it clear who you're chatting to
When you reply to another chatter's message remember to start the reply with part of their question so that it is clear that you are responding to their question or comment. For example, if a chatter writes, "What a beautiful sunny day it was today", you might reply "Yes, it was a nice day". If you simply say "Yes" it may be unclear to whom you are responding. If you are chatting to a specific person, identify the person before you say too much. For example, you might ask "John how is the weather in Geelong today" as this makes it clear that you are directing your comments at that particular person.
