Download mIRC for free from the
mIRC Website.
Once installed, go to File / Options / Connect / Add IRC Network [see below].
The server settings should be:

IRC server: mc2.vicnet.net.au or to bypass DNS enter: 203.10.72.244; or to connect via Wingate, enter the IP address of the Wingate server e.g. 192.168.0.1. Port: 6667
This gives you access to our chat server, port 6667. Then type /join #CHANNELNAME.
The channel name is usually the name of your group, but note the following:
e.g. Neil's Group (for Testing) has the channel name of #neils_group_for_testing
Using mIRC means you may not be able to join some channels if they're password restricted. See mIRC chat added password security

using mIRC to keep a record of the Chat
After we notify you that a password has been set, people will need the password to enter chat via external programs, e.g. in MIRC they would type /join #groupname password. In your groupname, you need to replace all spaces with underscores, e.g. mc² demo becomes #mc2_demo.
Owner/Moderators can get the password by logging into your group, going to Chat / Advanced settings, then click on "Get the Chat Password Emailed to you". Members can ask the Owner/Moderators for the password, which will be supplied, at their discretion. You can then store the password in your mIRC settings.
Members are not allowed to give the password to other members - with password protected chat rooms, each member must be approved for access by the Owner/Moderators for that group. If the password becomes publicly known, just request that it be changed to a new password. See also Code of Conduct: Passwords
