What is an Applet?

An Applet is a small Java program downloaded and run through your Web Browser. See the Glossary of Internet Terms to explain more "Geek-Speak"!

Java Applet

After you have entered a nickname and clicked on the ENTER button, your computer should automatically download the Java Applet to allow the chat console Window to open:

But before this Java chat window opens, a window may pop up, similar to the one shown below. This is what you would see if you are using Internet Explorer (IE) as your browser:

SAY YES to security warning to run & install Java applet

You must click on YES to enter the chat.

If you just get a grey screen, your machine may not be Java-enabled. See below: Java support must be enabled

This window may look different in different browsers - in Netscape you need to click on Grant - see Netscape here. If you downloaded Java directly from Sun, then you may get a different Java Security Warning - just click "Grant". VICNET has paid a license fee to JPilot to use their chat applet. As such, we do not consider running it a high security risk, indeed, without it, you can't chat!

If you click "NO" [or "Deny"], you will not be able to use chat!

If you do so by mistake, you may need to close your whole browser and start again!

The Chat Window should now be open:

If you just get a grey box, as below:
Java not installed
it could be because you do not have Java or Javascript enabled on your browser. See: Java support must be enabled
