My Connected Community (mc²) is an initiative of the Victorian Government's Connecting
Communities policy. It is funded by the Victorian Government through the Citizen Access and
Transformation Division, Department for Victorian Communities and coordinated by
Vicnet. The main objective of mc² is to encourage community groups located in Victoria (Australia) to create their own online communities. mc² offers participating groups a variety of free, easy to use Web-based services which they can use to communicate with existing members & like-minded communities across the world.
Online groups created at this site must be community based groups. Community based groups include special interest groups such as sporting clubs or hobby groups, support groups, not-for-profit organisations, local government entities, state government agencies and peak bodies. In February 2000, the Minister for State and Regional Development approved the "Skills.net for Community Groups" project. This has since become referred to as "my connected community", or mc² (pronounced "em see squared"). The program aimed to train and resource community leaders to promote the benefits of online activity throughout their communities, and assist group members to similarly develop and use online skills.
During the pilot community leaders were selected from 30 community groups (including cultural and sporting clubs, associations, social and special interest groups, such as Austprem) who were willing to develop an online community of interest amongst their members and the wider population. The pilot program ensured that these groups were provided with the support and tools needed to build an online community. The pilot concluded in October 2000. On Tuesday 27 March 2001 the "my connected community" program was launched by the Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby at the Royal Women's Hospital.
